The Spring Hill Farmers Market was founded in 1999 by the Sunflower Ruritan Club. One of the members, Jane Weathers, loved small town America and founding and managing the Spring Hill Farmers Market was her “love affair with the city of Spring Hill”. The initial intent was to provide an affordable place for Spring Hill area residents to offer their own produced goods for sale. At the same time Spring Hill area residents would have an affordable place to purchase high quality, individually produced items.
The initial market was on Historic Main Street, but eventually moved to the elementary school parking lot on Webster, which had more visibility and parking. Through the years the market has hosted over 100 different vendors. Some vendors came only once or twice a year while others remained the entire season. Over the years both the number of seasonal vendors and customers continued to grow.
In 2007, the Sunflower Ruritans felt they no longer had the membership to continue to support the market and they went looking for another Civic organization to take over the reins. The Spring Hill Lions Club answered the call and since 2008 they have sponsored the Spring Hill Farmers Market. There have been a few changes in the past three years; the market season was extended – now opening in mid May. With this extended season, the market is able to offer more variety of produce; spring bedding plants and cool weather spring crops. The number of vendors has increased as well – in 2013 over 27 vendors registered for all or part of the season. The market now has a terrific website thanks to the support of Dave Lawrence with the KC Food Circle who created the original design and most recently Chad Allenbrand has given us a fresh, new look. The market manager’s booth offers complimentary coffee and pastry every Saturday. And, the City of Spring Hill has grown significantly. What has not changed is the mission and intent of the market. The Spring Hill Farmers Market continues to strive to offer local area residents a place to sell and buy high quality, home grown, home baked, hand crafted items. The new market manager, Patti Stites, continues to share Jane’s vision for the market and is passionate about making the market a “destination event” on Saturday morning. While new vendors are added every year a core group of the original vendors remain – 15 years later – and so do their loyal customers. The Spring Hill area residents continue to love the concept of a farmers market and during peak season the market hosts an average of 200 visitors on Saturday morning.
The market is thankful to so many of its supporters. The Spring Hill Lions Club for sponsoring the market, USD 230 for donating the use of its parking lot and the Spring Hill Chamber of Commerce for its continued contributions. They are most thankful for their dedicated vendors and customers who come out every Saturday morning, regardless of the weather, to enjoy the abundance of produce and products and the sense of community provided by the farmers market experience.
